Why work at Talman?
There's a whole bunch of reasons why working at Talman is a great career move...

1. We are growing
Talman is currently a small company - we have 31 staff of which 15 are developers. But we are growing. Particularly in our web development department. With a number of larger, successful projects in place we now have the procedures ready to grow. You can be part of it. Either starting as a Junior and building up, or as a Senior and taking the lead early on. We plan to double in size by 2008. Help us get there...

2. Technology
We are reasonably early adopters of technology. All our current web work is .Net 2.0 and SQL Server 2005, managed using Team Foundation Server for example. However, although we actively encourage staff to play with beta software, we don't put anything into production with it. So, if you are one of those people who loves to be flying by the seat of their pants with production systems running on beta then we are NOT the place for you. But if you like to stay up to date, building proper, fully designed systems on the latest technology then we ARE the place for you.

3. Location
We are in leafy Lane Cove. Our offices are quiet and overlook the Lane Cove River. Every staff member has their own parking spot in our car park - no fighting for a car spot each morning.

4. Management
Our MD, Peter Metcalf, has focussed on people management over the last decades (we are over 30 years in business). As such, we are one of the few companies that has no office politics, no back-stabbing, no ridiculous, time-wasting corporate requirements coming down from 'on high'. Nup. Rather we have a very open, team focussed atmosphere. Managers are always approachable, and everyone is rewarded for their individual contributions.

5. Staff turnover
We have an average staff turnover timeframe of 8 years. That means that when we hire staff, they stay on average for 8 years. Compare this to any other technology company and you'll understand why this speaks volumes. We are looking for people to come on board and make a career here.

6. No guff mission statements
Are you sick of recruiters and companies sucking up to you telling you 'its all about you'? Let's be honest here... It's not all about you. You are not the centre of the universe. And neither are we. Rather, we are a team working together to provide great software solutions to our clients. If you are smart and hard working, you'll be rewarded well financially. And you'll get more and more opportunities to improve your skills. But if you think you are coming in to have the world revolve around you, then sorry we aren't the place.

7. Training
We alluded to this earlier. We need you to be working with the latest technology and knowing how to use it well. That's why we have a general policy in our development teams that you should be spending 10% of your time improving your skills. That's half a day a week spent on reading, using, playing, training with new stuff. Sometimes you don't get a chance to do this for weeks if you are working to a strict deadline, other times you get a few days or a week off to go to training courses. It all evens out. But the important thing is to make sure you do it. And Talman management is proactive in ensuring this happens.

8. A decent coffee machine
Are you sick of having to drink that instant rubbish in a supposedly high tech company. C'mon, we need decent coffee right? At Talman we have a top of the line Jura Espresso machine (see below) to ensure those caffeine addicted devs amongst us are well catered for. Phew.
